Mets Cap Off Roller Coaster June

The Mets have won 4 in a row and go for the sweep of the Dodgers tonight on national television.  We’re coming up on the All-Star break and I’m so excited that the Mets are in the hunt and continue to overachieve this season.  R.A. Dickey and David Wright were selected to the All-Star team and Dickey is the favorite to start the game for National League.  His storybook season has been fascinating to watch and after 10 years of ups and downs, he deserves his All-Star moment.

New York is 2.5 games back of the Nationals for 1st place in the NL East.  The division is certainly not shaping up to be what everyone predicted it would like before the season started.  The Phillies, whose starters include Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee and Cole Hamels, are 8 games under .500 and in last place.  The Marlins, who acquired Jose Reyes, Mark Buehrle and Heath Bell in the offseason, are 3 games under .500 and in 4th place.  Injuries have played a large part in the NL East this season and for once the Mets are on the positive side.  Johan Santana and Chris Young have been stellar after missing the entire previous season after undergoing shoulder surgeries.  The injury bug hit the shortstop position but with the help of Buffalo call-ups stepping in, the Mets haven’t skipped a beat.

June was a roller coaster month, with a lot of winning streaks followed by losing streaks, followed by winning streaks again.  The Mets started the month with a 3-game winning streak, followed by a 3-game losing streak.  They sprinkled in a win before falling victim to another 3-game losing streak after getting swept by the Yankees.  They followed up that sweep with a 3-game sweep of its own against Tampa Bay.  Thinking the team was back on a roll, they promptly got swept by Cincinnati for their third 3-game losing streak of June.   The Mets rebounded with a 4-game winning streak, sweeping Baltimore and even adding their lone win over the Yankees this season.  But then they reverted back to the mean with a 4-game losing streak.  They finished up a series in Chicago with a dominant 17-1 win to snap that 4-game losing streak and have now taken 3 of their first 4 against the Dodgers to build up yet another 4-game winning streak.  June was quite a ride and luckily the team enters July on a winning streak.  Now it gets serious.  The Mets proved they are contenders and now is the time to continue to play good baseball and remain in the hunt for the NL East.
